Media and Consultancy

Media

I do a lot of public speaking and media work about surveillance issues, and am very happy to be contacted to give interviews or comment. Please contact me directly, or go through uOttawa Newsroom.

Consultancy

I have briefed, or consulted for, a wide variety of regulatory organizations and NGOs including the Canadian Security Intelligence Review Committee (SIRC), the Canadian federal Office of the Privacy Commissioner (OPC), Liberty (UK human rights lobby), the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK House of Lords Constitution Committee, and the International Committee of Human Rights Policy (ICHRP).

I am happy to discuss any ethical consultancy needs in the areas of surveillance, urban security and human rights. Please see below for what I will and will not do. Rejection tends to offend so I want to be clear in advance.

Consultancy Ethics

I will use my position and privilege to try to uplift those who are voiceless, speak truth to power, increase social, environmental and data justice, and decrease oppressive or exploitative surveillance.

I will not do anything that aims directly or indirectly at decreasing human rights or social, environmental and data justice, or increasing oppressive or exploitative surveillance.

I will not do paid work with, or provide free labour for, any government or government body or institution that conducts oppressive or exploitative surveillance or is directly or indirectly involved in violations of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms or conducts genocide, wars of aggression, arbitrary arrest and imprisonment, torture, or other violations of international human rights law.

I will not do paid work with, or provide free labour for, any company that profits from oppressive or exploitative surveillance, or is directly or indirectly involved in activities which violate the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms or international human rights law.

I will work with regulators of intelligence, police and prison / corrections services, but not the intelligence, police or prison / corrections services themselves.

I will work with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) / Non-Profit Organizations (NPOs) and genuine community / grass-roots organizations, which aim to criticize, control, resist surveillance etc.

I will talk with individuals who are interested in views contrary to those of their institution.

I will support whistleblowers and other individuals who dissent from the oppressive or exploitative activities or policies of their institution or government.

Examples of organizations which I would turn down (a very much non-exclusive list!):

Palantir, Anduril, Google, Enbridge, the RCMP, CSIS, China, Russia, USA, Israel, Myanmar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Turkey, Hungary & etc.
